This brand new 4-weekend-module program will take you from birth through teen, and beyond. You will leave with comprehensive, adaptable tools and strategies to share the gift of yoga with the young people in your life, and to care for yourself while doing so.
Now more than ever, these critical skills are needed.
Meet and connect with like-minded others to build community around working holistically with children. We will begin remotely and will add an in-person option as soon as it is safe to do so. Our expert lead trainers bring with them a combined century of preparing others to work with young people. Now their evidence-based coursework will be coordinated for even greater impact.
Each weekend module can be taken separately for independent certification, and all 4 can be combined to qualify for the Yoga Alliance Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT) designation. Please note that although one’s training need not be completed in any particular order, one must also be registered with Yoga Alliance as a 200-hour Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) to qualify as an RCYT.
Module #1 – Anatomical and Motor Development Birth Through Adolescence

In the opening module, Amy will begin with laying a solid foundation of typical anatomical, physiological and motor development from birth through adolescence. This information will inform your work with young people, helping you to identify realistic expectations for your students, providing insight regarding atypical development, and allowing us to place our students along a developmental as well as chronological continuum.
Course objectives include understanding developmental anatomy and the changes that occur in the musculoskeletal system; the transition from primitive reflexes through the developmental movement sequences, which allow children to move more intentionally; and the complex unifying purposes of the vestibular system in maintaining balance and equilibrium, and regulating arousal levels.
Module #2: The FUNdamentals of Mindfulness and Yoga for Kids

October 1 – October 3, 2020
Module 2 provides playful engaging tools to support children ages 3-12 with self-regulation and acceptance; navigation of emotions; sensitivity to diversity; and widening the gap between impulse and action. Based on Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Missy will introduce multisensory approaches to teaching and learning to support you in meeting kids exactly where they are physically, socially and emotionally.
Experience the efficacy of “Deep Play” throughout our weekend and leave overflowing with adaptable, recreatable strategies that are steeped in science and delivered through play.
Course objectives include delving into the science of yoga and how its practice can benefit kids; exploring the body mind connection through mindful movement; trauma sensitivity; and understanding the importance of our own self-care as we care for others.
Module #3: Teaching Yoga To Children with Special Needs

November 5 – November 7, 2021
Module 3 will provide everything needed to confidently teach yoga to children and teens with special needs. In this course Craig will reference typical child development as a guide to identify where students are developmentally, which will inform one’s approach to teaching. The training will focus primarily on working with groups of children, though most information offered will be applicable to individual work as well. Participants will benefit by learning fun and creative ways to engage and support children with special needs in the practice of yoga.
Course objectives include addressing challenging behaviors; providing different types of sensory input to support self-regulation; creating structure and predictability in a kids’ yoga class; being informed regarding contraindications; and knowing how to modify postures appropriately for those you are working with. We will also learn to enlist yoga to support speech and language development, sensory processing and reading retention.
Module #4 – Mindful and Restorative Yoga Skills for Teens

Module 4 is designed to enact the potential and power of an intentionally built yoga practice for teenagers while they undergo a stage of physical, neurological, social and emotional transformation. Abby will deepen your understanding of how to deliver the eight-limbed system of Yoga and mindful practices using methods that meet youth ages 12-18 while honoring this developmental stage.
Course objectives include developing trauma-informed and culturally responsive instruction skills to captivate the hearts and minds of youth being served. The mechanics of pacing and sequencing will be covered in the context of ethics, self-care, and social-emotional learning. Experiential activities will illustrate the relevance of inquiry, trust-building and collaboration in yoga education for teens as they emerge into the world with agency, resilience and awareness.
